* Why did my taxes go up?
There could be several factors that affect your tax bill. Let’s help break it down for you. There are 4 tax line items. Municipal, School, State Education, and County.
- The Municipal Tax rate is set by town voters. This is the combination of all items such as the town budget, warrant articles, Capital Improvement Program (CIP), and bonds that are voted on in March.
- The School Tax rate is also set by the town voters. This is the School budget, warrant articles, collective and bargaining agreements like salary and benefits.
- The State Education Tax is set by our legislators is Concord.
- The County Tax is determined by a combination of the county’s legislative delegation and the NH Department of Revenue.
Each of these added together form the first part of your rate. The second part of setting your rate is the assessed value of your home. Just because your town performs a townwide reassessment does not always mean that your taxes will go up too. The last factor is changes made to your home. Did you add a pool or remodel your home? Upgrading your home can increase the value of your home as well as affecting your tax rate.
